The DL: Union Square Greenmarket- Living in NYC and even when visiting, a farmers market might not be one of the first things to come to mind when you think of the big city. However, you won’t be disappointed with a visit to the Union Square Greenmarket located at Union Square Park. Here are 5 reasons why you should make this year-round market a stop on your next Saturday.
1. Flowers.
Hands down I have seen the most diverse and beautiful flower selections at this market. If not buying any, still fun to see all the different options out there.
Tip: Take a walk around to all vendors before buying your flowers that way you can keep them in the water as long as possible.
2. Availability.
The market is open all year-round and 4 days a week, 8-6 (M, W, F, S). I would recommend going on a Saturday purely because there are more vendors, but it is nice to have the option if you are stopping by during your lunch break or visiting NYC during the week. Make sure to double-check their website before going.
Tip: First Saturday of every month there is usually a cooking demo.
3. Variety.
Veggies and Fruits for days, anything in season you can think of you can probably find at this market. On top of that, you can pick from a wide variety of other options sold like meats, cheeses, wine, baked goods (including gluten-free options), plants, seafood, maple syrup, soaps, and seasonal items like apple cider, pumpkins etc.
Tip: Many if not most of the vendors provide plastic bags if you don’t have your own, you are in luck.
4. Collection.
Food scrap and clothing collection (Mon, Sat) takes place at this market. Residents, you can compost household food waste and donate clothes and linens all at the same time as you get your groceries for the week. Score!
5. Support Local.
No need for an explanation here, this is a fun and inexpensive way to support local farmers and vendors and take home something memorable.
General Tip: Plan to start at E 14th street and Union Square W. and walk north along the park for the most direct walk around the farmers market tents.
