Updated March 2023.
The DL: I have been to the keys a few times, and it never disappoints. The waters of the keys are the most beautiful blue and super clear. The overall vibe feels like you are in the Caribbean and you don’t have to ever leave the United States. Lots of the Keys go by mile markers so keep that in mind when planning. Also make sure to get fresh key lime pie and try the famous hog fish when you are exploring!
There are tons of little islands in the keys but the most visitor friendly tend to be:
- Key Largo
- Islamorada
- Big Pine
- Marathon
- Key West – lost of bars, restaurants, water activities
How to get the Keys:
I have always either flow into Ft Lauderdale or Miami, and rented a convertible and then hit the road right away (convertible is a must). If doing the full Keys experience head to the first key, Key largo and work your way down throughout the other Keys. On the way down we split up the drive and stayed in one of the Keys on the way down and then on the way back just drove straight through, its around a 3.5-4 hour drive. You can also fly straight into Key west, the prices tend to be higher. I think either way, having a car is ideal unless you are planning to just stay in Key West and ride share or bike.

Most of the beaches in Key west have very little sand and more rocky terrain, so most of your time if not at the hotel pool or little sandy area you can find. will be on the water!

Where to stay in Key West
We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria – Casa Marina and it was fabulous!
I would pick where you want to spend most of your time, since we had a car we weren’t as concerned about walkability. Hotels on the east side have a beach, hotel on the west are more convenient to everything but will have no sandy beach areas. Parking can be limited in most areas, so if you can walk or bike that’s a nice option. The whole island across at its widest is no longer than 2 miles so all really is walkable.
