The DL: A remote island and only a 35-minute flight from Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, you will find the beautiful island of South Caicos. There is really nothing on the island except for the two main resorts; Sailrock and East Bay resort. It is very underdeveloped and only 8 miles. It used to be the main island due to the salt mines (which you will see on the island) but once the government stopped doing this the island came to a halt. What keeps people coming to the island is the fishing and diving, as well as the remote beaches. If planning to visit, I would stay a few days, no longer than a week as there is limited restaurants and things to do, but it is the perfect place to RELAX and get off the grid a bit.
Sailrock Resort:
The more bougee of the two resorts and that is reflected in its price. Not every room has an ocean view, and you have to take a shuttle to the beach. The amenities are what drive people to this resort.
- Upscale feel, larger resort
- Beautiful beach and amenities
- Pricier option
- Free shuttle from airport
- Wifi
- Lots of activity options
- 2 restaurants, private chef option
*This is the more popular resort
East Bay Resort:
A smaller more local feel or a resort, with the only real beach and where the divers tend to come. Every room has an ocean view and are massive. There is only 1 restaurant to eat from, and 1 main bar. This resort in the next year will be developed and more built out (more pools, restaurants etc.) which will drive up cost. If you want to take advantage of this resort then now is the time. Since it’s a heavy diving spot, if you are not a diver you pretty much have the resort to yourself since they go out and dive all day. They do have a spa but I did not check it out.
- Local feel, small resort
- Beautiful private beach and pool
- Feels like your one of the only ones there, almost a hidden gem
- Free shuttle from airport
- Wifi
- All inclusive option if you want, we did not do this
- 1 restaurant
*This is the more unknown resort but as they expand they will rival Sailrock due to their beach
How to get to South Caicos:
Take a flight via intercarribean, will cost you from $50-80 and seats about 16 people. You have amazing views the whole flight so get a window seat, it is open seating. Do not take the ferry. When you get to the “airport” there is basically no airport – its two shipping containers (1 for security and check in, and 1 for sitting) it’s a bit of a shock so make sure to connect with you resort about pick up times. The flight will leave early each way, so plan to get to the airport like normal or within an hour. The seats are tight and not a lot of room for personal items, you can bring checked bags.
How to get around in South Caicos:
You need to get a rental car or bike depending on where you are staying if you want to leave the resort. I wouldn’t venture outside of the two resorts unless you are doing an excursion.
Things to do in South Caicos:
- Known for diving and fishing experiences
- We kayaked at jerry camp which was beautiful
- You can also visit Bell Sound Nature Preserve
- Take a short boat ride to the tranquil waters and beautiful beaches on Long Cay
Other details to know before you go:
- If you get a room with a kitchen at either resort, just know there is really one small grocery store ( I am talking tiny little building) that is very expensive.
- The pricing is just like the main island plan to spend $20-30 for lunch entrees and $30-50 for dinner entrees.
- Average temperatures 78-82 degrees
