We visited New Bedford, Massachusetts in mid November and honestly it was pretty dead and there wasn’t much going on in the fall but seems to be more lively in the summer… with that being said there was a few things I would recommend if you are will be passing by in the fall/winter or waiting to take the ferry to Marthas Vineyard or Nantucket out of the port.
The DL: New Bedford is a Southcoast town with history filled streets that are lined with murals and statues. About an hour from Boston, MA, Newport, RI and Cape Cod. New Bedford was also known as “the city that lit the world.” because of the whaling industry’s products and became one of the most profitable fishing ports in the Country.
1. New Bedford Whaling Museum
2. Visit Fort Rodman
Good place to just walk and get out and see the water that surrounds the fort. This is free and parking is free and is farther East in New Bedford.
3. Do one of the Historical Walking Tours
One of the neat things about New Bedford is its history. You can walk where 17th century settlers walked, and even see where Herman Melville found his inspiration for Moby Dick. See the list of walking tours here.
4. Drive-by some of the mansions from the 1700s
The downtown New Bedford is filled with beautiful mansions to just drive by and see the different designs and landscaping. We drove around the area between the zoo and the water.
5. Shop and Eat
We didn’t end up eating while in New Bedford, but some of the recommendations were Brick Pizzeria, DNB Burgers, Antonios, Cork Wine and Tapas, and the Black Whale. For breakfast – the baker. The downtown had some small shops on Union street, also check out the Landing Gift shop.
