The DL: Hunter Mountain located in Hunter, New York is the perfect day trip or short ski weekend. Hunter mountain is the second highest mountain in the Catskills and highest peak in the county. The crowd tends to be locals.
1. Day Trip Friendly
It’s a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from New York City
Tip: You will need to take toll routes to get here on the fastest route
2. About the Skiing
All the ski runs at Hunter Mountain are named after New York streets which I thought was pretty cool. However the lift lines are long, the staff can be somewhat rude, but overall the snow was great and ski runs were fun!
3. About the Mountain
There is parking at the bottom of the mountain that is easy to walk to the lodge, rentals were easy, and overall an affordable trip.
4. Food Options
The options in the downtown include Hunter Mountain Brewery, The Prospect, Van Winkles, Jagerberg Beer Hall and Tavern, Mama Boys Burgers. Food at the ski lodge was pretty sub par and what you expect so pack your own food if you want something specific.
5. Downtown Hunter
The Main Street is very colorful and filled with lots of restaurants and shops, a lot were not open because of the holiday weekend and COVID.
6. Winter Adventures
If you are looking for adventures offered during the winter besides skiing and snowboarding there is snow tubing and snow mobiles to rent, as well as snow hiking trails.
7. Off season Adventures
In other seasons, Hunter mountain is home to the New York Zipline Adventure tour – the longest and highest zipline in North America and they are also known for their flyfishing.
COVID info – we went during the pandemic and just as a recap: masks are required at all times and they are pretty strict in the lines and public spaces. Lift tickets and rentals were by reservation only, as well as food on the property. So make a reservation for food once at the park or else you will be stuck getting just the waffle stand.
