Whether it’s flying for work, seeing family, or a personal vacay, it can be hard to know what its really like to fly righ now when watching the media and reading articles. As I currently sit at the airport I can’t help but share my personal thoughts and feelings on how traveling domestically really has been during this pandemic. I have flown multiple times in and out of big and small airports and my experience has been pretty much the same. So for all of you out there wondering what it’s like here you go.
Things to know:
- Empty Airports. The airports really are as empty as the photos you’ve probably seen, especially when it comes to check-in and baggage claim areas
- Limited Staff. There is a limited amount of staff, so if you need assistance checking in it could take close to the same time it did before.
- Time. Even with that being said, you still don’t have to get to the airport as early as you normally would especially if not checking a bag
- TSA. TSA lines are pretty short, using precheck is still always worth it in my mind, but plan to move pretty quickly through either way
- At the Gate. The waiting area at the gate is one of the more crowded areas. People tend to social distance as much as they can with a couple of seats in between, but there are not enough seats at the gate to really do that. Especially depending on the time of day
- Food and Shops. There is a limited amount of shops and restaurants open at each terminal. If you are planning to eat at the airport just know your options could be slim
- Airline. Your experience can all depend on your airline. Many airlines are leaving the middle seat open like southwest and delta. Both I have flown on, and it has been great. However, I have flown on other airlines during COVID that have packed the flights full which makes for an uncomfortable flight for everyone. So this matters when booking a flight.
- Temp. I never had my temperature checked anywhere at the airport or before boarding
- Forms. If traveling to a state that has restrictions or quartine rules like NYC you will get the form before you board the flight. Once you land you will hand it to someone as soon as you get off or before you exit the airport area.
- Drinks. On every flight I have been on, only water has been offered. So if you want something else plan ahead.
- Masks. Masks are required on flights so be prepared to keep yours on the full length of the flight. Most airlines have masks if you don’t have one but plan to bring your own just in case
- Cleanliness. Most aircraft are cleaned in between flights thoroughly but bring hand sanitizer and wipes for an extra layer of comfort
- Flight. The rest of the flight was normal, and you exit and grab baggage like you would pre COVID
- Rental cars. Rental car lines can be longer than normal due to a smaller staff and fleet of cars. Keep this in mind if planning to rent a car
- Enjoy! All in all, I felt very safe flying during COVID-19. Be smart about your choices and enjoy!
