Figuring out what to do and where to stay can be super overwhelming for your first trip to Paris. After going a few times and researching all the things, I have put together a list of helpful deets to know before you go. Here is a first timers guide to Paris, one of my favorite places in Europe!
How to get to Paris:
There are 2 main airports:
- Charles de Gaulle Airport – Paris’s main international airport
- Orly Airport – Paris’s second international airport
Understanding the layout of Paris:
When first looking at the map it can be a bit overwhelming as the layout of Paris is one of the most unique in Europe. At its core, the Seine River runs through the city, dividing Paris into the Left Bank and Right Bank. You will hear these terms a lot. Then you must understand there are 20 arrondissements, or administrative districts that spiral out from the city center like a snail’s shell, with each one having its own distinctive character and attractions. The arrondissements are all numbered and you will see most refer to them by their number for ex: the 6th, or the 9th.
How to get around – the Paris Metro system, and how it works:
Using the Paris Metro system is a convenient and efficient way to navigate the city’s iconic neighborhoods and attractions. If it becomes overwhelming plan to uber as its cheap and you can usually get a car within 10 minutes. Ok, back to the metro! The first step is to purchase a ticket or a transportation pass, like the Paris Visite Card or Navigo Card, which allows unlimited travel within certain zones for a specified period. Once you have your ticket or card, head to the nearest Metro station, recognizable by its art nouveau signs. Inside, follow the signs for your desired line (identified by a number and color) and direction. You can use apple maps and it will tell you which line as well.
Once inside the train, check the electronic displays and metro maps above the doors to ensure you’re going in the right direction. Trains are frequent, so don’t worry if you miss one. When your stop approaches, listen for station announcements and watch the digital displays to know when to exit. Keep your ticket or card handy for possible inspections by Metro personnel or to get out of the station.
Where to stay – what are the best neighborhoods to stay in Paris as a first timer:
Choosing the right neighborhood to stay in during your first visit to Paris can really enhance your experience. Depending on what you want to do or see, and the vibes you are looking for each neighborhood is very different so keep that in mind. I like to split my stay in Paris with half of the trip in the left bank and the other on the right bank.
1. 6th Arrondissement (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) – My favorite place to stay, this chic Left Bank neighborhood is famous for its artistic history, cafes, bookshops, and art galleries. It is also within walking distance of landmarks like the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay and the Seine.
2. 8th Arrondissement (Champs-Élysées/Eiffel Tower) – You’ll find high-end shopping on the Champs-Élysées and easy access to the Eiffel Tower, Trocadéro Gardens, and Seine River cruises. Feels like a rodeo drive and can be touristy feeling.
3. 2nd Arrondissement – While not as famous as some other Parisian neighborhoods, the 2nd arrondissement offers a unique blend of history and culture. It’s an excellent place for those interested in shopping, business, and exploring a less touristy side of Paris while still being centrally located. There is not a lot of night life here compared to some of the more vibrant night scenes.
4. 9th Arrondissement (Opéra Garnier) – Known for its grand opera house, this district offers a mix of shopping, theaters, and the bustling main streets. There is a younger crowd here with a lively restaurant scene.
5. 1st Arrondissement (Louvre) – Home to the Louvre Museum, Palais Royal, and the Tuileries Gardens, this is where you’ll find some of Paris’s most iconic landmarks. This area feels iconic but not local.

These are just a few of the many amazing districts in Paris, each with its own unique atmosphere, attractions, and experiences to offer. Depending on your interests, you can choose the one that suits your preferences best for your visit to the City of Light. Ultimately, the best neighborhood for you depends on your interests and priorities.
What to do as a first timer in Paris
Check out my top 10 touristy sights here. But in general here are some fun must do’s into 3 main categories:
1. Visit Iconic Landmarks: Visit to the Eiffel Tower at night, an afternoon at the Louvre Museum, walk by Notre-Dame Cathedral or the Arch De Triumph and boat down the Seine.
2. Eat your way through Paris as it is a culinary paradise. Visit charming cafes for a leisurely breakfast of croissants or an afternoon cheese board is a must. Plan to have a Parisian picnic along the Seine River or indulge in a romantic dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Some popular spots include Bar Hemmingway for a drink, Ralphs Garden for lunch, Gigis or Giraffe for an Eiffel Tower view, Le Train Bleu for a historical moment, or the 22 club for an intimate dining experience.
3. Explore the Neighborhoods: Strolling through the streets of Paris is the best way to embrace the local culture and find hidden gems. Spend time slowing down your pace and enjoying a sidewalk cafe in a local neighborhood where you can people watch and embrace the neighborhood’s charm.
How long should I go for:
If it is your first time I would recommend at least 4 days. A week+ would be glorious! Enjoy your time and plan to embrace the culture and live the life of a Parisian.
