The DL – Rockaway Beach: 25 miles from Manhattan, this recently updated beach town makes for an easy day trip to escape the city.
Don’t Expect: Lots to do outside of the beach, more than a weekend of things to do, the water to look like the Caribbean.
How to get there: Take the ferry from Wall street pier 11 it’s around $2.75 each way and only an hour trip. Ride on top of the ferry and get some pre-beach sun/ check out some pretty cool views or ride down below and watch tv, charge your phone, and enjoy the air conditioning. There is usually a bar onboard the ferry. There are subway routes and buses that you can take as well, but I prefer the ferry option. The beach itself is free!
What to do: The beach of course!
- Jacobs Riis/ Fort Tilden
- The whole coast is lined with beaches that are named by the numbers perpendicular to the street aka Beach 2 to Beach 227. The easiest thing to do would be to go to the nearest beach to where your transit drops you off!
Where to Eat:
- Tacoway Beach
- Caracas
- Rockaway Beach Surf Club
- Rippers
Tips to Know:
- Once you get off the ferry follow the crowd along 108 st and it will take you directly to the beach (Beach 108). There are a few places to eat and drink along the boardwalk. Looking to pick up some food, drinks, alcohol on your way in? Stop by Boardwalk bagel & delicatessen. There are also places to grab food on the boardwalk and most importantly there are bathrooms nearby at these beaches.
- The streets run from Beach 2 to Beach 227 perpendicularly. With a boardwalk that runs most of the way so feel free to bring or rent a bike (many options along the boardwalk).
- If you take the subway you will get off close to Beach 116 compared to where the ferry drops you off, you can check out Pickles & Pies on your walk-in.
