The DL: The sister town to Porto across the Douro River is Vila Nova de Gaia – or known as Gaia. It has a more local vibe to the town, heavy on the Port wine, a great food scene and even better views of Old town Porto. Here are 7 things to do in Gaia.
- World of Wine – made of old port warehouses and now filled with restaurants, museums, shops and fun bars
- Do a Port wine tasting – I personally didn’t love port but if you want to check out some of the popular ones include Sandeman, Taylors, Cálem, Graham’s and Quinta do Noval.
- Catch a view of Old town Porto – Terrace cable car bar, Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar heritage site, or climb the city stairs up to the top of the hills
- Great food scene – one of the only Michelin starred spots around town at the Yeatman hotel, Enoteca 1756 for mid price with ambiance, or the foodhall for cheaper eats.
- Take the cable car – Teleférico de Gaia and see the River from new heights, visit Jarim Do Morro
- Praia de Miramar – if you have time to visit the beach (bike, car, train)
- Rent bikes and ride up and down the Douro River
